The Best Mountain for Hiking in Croatia
If you want to hike in Croatia the choice is really wide, wherever you go you will not be disappointed, but impressed. It is difficult to single out the most beautiful hiking trails and hills in Croatia, because each is unique in its own way. But I will definitely recommend you those famous and all those that at first glance leave you breathless.
One, the only, the unique – Velebit. Unrivalled Velebit is the most beautiful Croatian mountain. There is no person who has indifferent when sees this mountain, from its northern, central and southern parts.
His best-known way is Premuzic trail. It is located in the National Park Northern Velebit. It extends from Zavizan to Baske Ostarije and is 57 kilometres long. This is a real treat for all hikers. A marked trail goes through the loveliest and most inaccessible parts of Velebit without bigger gradients and descents. Velebit on the top offers a view of Adriatic Sea and interior of Velebit. The trail passes through wild and impressive karsts Rozanski kukovi.
The hiking trail to the Stap and its Stone Gallery (Kamena galerija) on the southern Velebit is an area between Baske Ostarije and Paklenica focused on the coastal side. Stap is surrounded by beautiful karsts hips and forms. Particularly noteworthy is the stone Cucavac located above the Stap and which is called the miracle of statics and huge pillar Stapina, and there is a Debeli kuk (Wide hip). The special charm of this area gives the Stone Gallery, a labyrinth through which the mountaineer from Zadar, Slavko Tomerlin Tatek, edited demanding and attractive hiking trail. The most interesting forms gave names like A Passage with Windows (Kuloar s prozorom), Golden Gate (Zlatna vrata), Dragon Ridge (Zmajev hrbat), and Terrace of Knives (Terasa nozeva)… The tour lasts about an hour, and requires a lot of hiking skills.
Little Prince (Mali Princ)
Path Little Prince (Mali Princ) hiking trail is in Crnopac, the most southern part of Velebit. This terrain is full of caves, cliffs and sinkholes. Path the Little Prince is an attractive circuitous route through the rocks and woods below the White hip (Bijeli kuk). The route abounds with weird rock formations. This educational trail is one of the more demanding hiking trails.
Velika kapela – White and Samarska Rocks
Velika kapela – White and Samarska Rocks which are also protected area. Hiking on Samarska cliffs requires a lot of climbing ability. There are several tours through the large rocks. Samarska cliffs make dozens of stone peaks, large boulders, and dolines are covered in dense forest. Nature is simply fascinating. Unlike Samarska Rocks, White Rocks are composed of several tens of meters high cliffs. There can still be met with abysses with eternal snow. A set of extremely steep and high cliffs, called Fingers (Prsti), are a symbol of White Rocks. Do not miss this destination.
When you are already in the vicinity, it is worth to go to Ogulin, more precisely climb to the “sleeping giant” above the city, known as Klek. If it is viewed from the south looks like a giant that lies feet are rocks Klecice, and the top part are the head. This is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Croatia. Klek’s Rocks are vertical and overhang, and it was more climbing and sports routes. According to an old folk tale at the top of the Klek are the assembled witches and they became his symbol.
Mountain Ucka rises above the Opatija Riviera. From each place of the Opatija Riviera there is access pass Gift (Poklon) with which starts hiking trails. Outperforming the big height difference and tours tend to be harder. On the slopes grow many herbs, and full of the caves, caverns, sources, and because of its diversity it is declared a Nature Park.
One of the most impressive mountains is definitely Dinara. It is the highest mountain in Croatia, and is the natural border between Dalmatia and Bosnia. The ups require good shape because they are long and steep, but each is worth it to walk that road. On Dinara is the highest peak in Croatian, Sinjal (1831 m). From Sinjal you can see the mountains of Bosnia and Dalmatia, and if it is well visible and Peruca Lake (Perucko jezero)
Not to be missed Mosor. It rises above Split and Omis. To tour this Dalmatian beauty you have to move in a circular path from Sitno Gornji and in two days experience all the magic of Mosor. Mosor is full of terraced valleys, caves and sinkholes. Since it is extremely rocky terrain, avoid hiking in bright sunlight, and on tour in the summer should move in the morning.
Magnificent wall of Biokovo will take your breath. From beach of Makarska you can look at this imposing mountain. Because of its many special features and the natural diversity the whole mountain is Nature Park. Due to the difficult terrain you have to be a good planer of routes and be sure to avoid walking on the heat or bad weather conditions. A number of paths that lead to the peaks of the mountains are well marked, but you should have the map always with you. Many overestimate their capabilities and the mountain are known as the mountain with the most accidents.
In continental Croatia for its beauty, dense forests and various trails stand out the Medvednica. The slopes of the side where Zagorje is are steep, and Medvednica is also known for its thermal springs. Certainly worth a visit Veternica cave, 500 Horvat’s steps, Stone wedding (Kameni svatovi), the ruins of Zelingrad, Ponikve, Sopot Waterfall … Options and choices routes is very much, so you will not go wrong whatever you choose because you will enjoy the dense forests.
Samobor and Zumberak Hills
Samobor and Zumberak hills form one unit. Samobor Hills is part of the Zumberak hills, and has a variety of characteristics. Highlands are rich in vegetation, with rocky and sharp peaks, caves and sinkholes. Numerous homes and well-marked trails are popular among hikers who frequent visits. To all Zumberak villages, from moving on tours and mountain huts can be reached by car. Just like Medvednica and Zumberak has its own waterfall Sopot. It is located near Sosice, and 40 m high.
You are wrong if you thought that Slavonia is flat. To the satisfaction of all climbers there are Pozeska Mountain, Psunj, Papuk, Krndija and Dilj Mountain. Among them, the Psunj and Papuk. Psunj is the highest mountain of Pozega highlands and Slavonia. It is characterized by deciduous forests and beautiful valleys. Must keep in mind that in some areas there are also mines left from the war. After the war, the roads are re-marked, but it is possible that even with those paths have residual explosive devices.
Papuk is however very steep and forested mountains. The most important mountaineering destinations are Velika, Jankovac, reef Lapjak… Papuk is definitely the most picturesque mountains of Slavonia and the area Jankovac is a real phenomenon with two caves, two lakes and waterfalls Skakavac. The central part of Papuk is protected as a Nature Park.
