Things to do in Omis
Omis is situated approximately 25 kilometres south-east of Croatia’s second largest city, Split. Its location is where the green Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea. Omis has around 15,000 inhabitants.
Cultural Sights
The rich and extensive history of Omis, which was first mentioned in the tenth century, is best to explore through the rich cultural and historical monuments.
In the middle Ages, piracy was one of the main incomes for the townspeople. With its fast boats, and with a suitable position of the town Omis, pirates have been spreading fear. From that time are some of todays cultural sights.
Fortress Mirabela
Fortress Mirabela or Peovica was used as reconnaissance. From the fortress can see the whole Old Town, Brac Channel, part of the canyon of the Cetina River and parts of Punta, Prika and Duce. At that time when the Pirates were the terror of the whole Adriatic timely alert from the top of Mirabella was crucial.
St Michael’s Church
St Michael’s Church was built in the early seventeenth century. The Church is full of interesting works of art and you have to visit her. In the square outside the church are held a variety of musical and cultural events including the famous Festival of Dalmatian songs which is a real treat for lovers of harmony singing.
Fortress Fortica
Fortress Fortica is located at the top of Omis Dinara and it was one of the most important strongholds of the well-known Omis pirates. From the tower is a view of the town Omis, the islands of Brac, Hvar, Solta and canyon Cetina.
The Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter in Omis is from the 9th or 10th century. It is located on the right side of the river Cetina, in the documents was first mentioned in 1074 during the reign of King Slavac. It was built on the site of an early Christian sacral building in time of Poljica Republic.

Due to its special position Omis offers numerous possibilities for sports and various activities. Rafting on Cetina River is one of the most famous in Croatia, and it certainly should try. Omis offers climbing the cliff Omis Dinara, paragliding, zipline, fishing, diving and lot of other activities.

Zipline is one of the newest additions in touristic offers of Omis. During the three-hour zipline adventure in a truly unique way, you will experience the beautiful canyon of the river Cetina. You will experience more than three hours rush to 2 kilometres long strings of which are located at a height greater than 100 meters.

Thematic Paths
One of the benefits of vacation in Omis is long footpaths that thanks to the efforts of local enthusiasts each year are becoming more numerous. Today, there are a few dozen paths that you can use to go wherever you want! From the centre of Omis, only for a few hours through the well-maintained paths, you can reach the highest peaks of the surrounding mountains, the old pirate fortress, beautiful lookouts and numerous picturesque villages.
Large and Small Gubavica Waterfalls
Tens of thousands years the river Cetina has shaped the landscape through which passed – wore stones, sliced mountains and made his way to the estuary into the sea. In this millennial journey Cetina was created one of the most beautiful canyons in Croatia, and perhaps best of all are created the two waterfalls, Big Gubavica (49 meters) and Small Gubavica (7 meters). Waterfalls are located near the village Zadvarje. Why are these waterfalls so special among hundreds of others in the world? You can swim beneath of them. These places are amazing natural oasis where river Cetina, just a few meters from the powerful waterfall, at the moment soothes its wild nature and makes it suitable for swimming and enjoying the view of the mighty water that falls from almost 50 meters high!
Rafting
Rafting on the Cetina River more than two decades is a favourite activity for many tourists who stay in Omis. This river adventure is particularly attractive because, if necessary, can be adapted to all. Families with children and seniors will enjoy the easy rowing through untouched nature, while the lovers of adrenaline could go a different route on which to expect a struggle with numerous river rapids.
Scuba Diving
In Omis and many smaller towns on its Riviera are hide some of the most beautiful beaches and bays in Dalmatia, and opportunities for diving and underwater exploration in this area are one of the best on the entire Adriatic. Omis simply has it all – from shallow submarine plains available to all, to deep and hidden rocks which will investigate only experienced divers. More experienced divers will certainly delight Vruja bay – one of the best diving locations in Croatia.
Gastronomy
Definitely have to try the famous specialty of Omis area – Poljicki soparnik. Basically, it’s a pie from spinach, green onions and parsley, with two layers of dough. With soparnik excellent tastes are homemade cherry Marasca.
Enjoy in traditional dishes of Omis area such as brodetto from eel, breaded frogs’ legs and grilled trout… Bon appetite!
