Primosten is a small town built on an island close to the coast and is located on the Adriatic coast, between Sibenik and Trogir, if you look at the map. It is known for autochthonous stone houses, churches, and narrow streets.
This area is known for very early traces of Illyrian, Greek and Croatian population, but the place with Croatian name Primosten was first time mentioned in 1564. Even then, a small island with the village was protected by a defensive wall. With the mainland was connected through a movable wooden bridge, but later is connected to the mainland by the embankment.
Famous for vineyards
The town is famous for its huge and beautiful vineyards. UNESCO still considering the inclusion of Primosten’s vineyards in the UNESCO list of heritage.
Apart from its vineyards, Primosten is known for the traditional donkey race which is organized every summer. The largest beach in Primosten is Raduca, and there is Mala Raduca, which was chosen as one of 10 most beautiful beaches in Croatia.
The main economic activities have been for a long time agriculture and livestock. A hard life of Primosten’s farmers testifies old houses – crooked houses with no windows.
Since the middle of last century, Primosten was started with developing tourism and became one of the leading tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast.
Known for production of olive oil and wine
Today is known for its production of olive oil and wine. The vineyards were created in the stone, with kilometers of stone walls, this is the ode to the human work and perseverance. Vines in this area is cultivated since the time of the Illyrians and Liburnians. The tradition was then continued to the Greeks and Romans, and Croats continue with cultivating of vineyards since the 7th century.

Things to do in Primosten
The Church of St Juraj (St George)
At the heart of the old part of the place is situated Church of St Jurja, built on top of the hill in the 15th century, and was thoroughly reconstructed in 1760. It keeps the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary with silver adornments and a representation of St. Mary with St Luke and George, a work by Master Cusi from 1719.
If you walk along the beautiful promenade, you can enjoy the view of the sea, cruisers, boats, stone beach and recharge mobile phone at the smart bench (Croatian Inventions).
Be sure to visit the famous vineyards of Primosten, which are with its unique composition of grapes, stone and sea became recognizable worldwide.
There is an ongoing project of including Primosten’s vineyards on the list of UNESCO’s cultural heritage. If the Bucavac vineyard would be listed in the UNESCO’s list, Primosten’s vineyards will become the second protected vineyards in the world.
Wine roads connect the villages of Primosten Burnji. Visit them and learn about the production and processing of wine.
In the hinterland of Primosten are about thirty villages and hamlets where tourists can enjoy the natural harmony of past and enjoy the culinary tastes and smells.
