But if you are not a skier have you thought how to get away from every day somewhere in the house in the mountain? Gorski Kotar is part of Croatia that has a very interesting and beautiful area that offers a number of opportunities for a various kind of sports and recreational activities in the winter season.
The climate in Gorski Kotar is continental. It has a very short and cool summer and winters are long and cold with plenty of snow.
It is also very well develop hunting tourism and alpinism due to dense and large forests. Lika is very diverse and different because it covers a very large area. All those who visit Lika will surely enjoy and find a way to comeback in this incredible place.
Platak – the only ski resort that offers a view of the sea!
The small ski resort of your dreams is situated next to the National Park Risnjak, and only 30km from the city of Rijeka. It is the only ski resort with a magnificent view of the sea. Ski tracks are 10 km long and there is a snowmaking system. The paths are lighted so you can enjoy night skiing. Platak offers private accommodation in the form of two mountain huts. You can enjoy in traditional culinary delicacies, mulled wine and Rakia (homemade brandy).
Bjelolasica – Croatian Olympic Centre
The most famous and largest ski resort in Croatia is located in Gorski Kotar, only 27 kilometers from the town of Ogulin. It is an ideal place for skiers and winter sports enthusiasts as the numerous ski trails stretch for 10 kilometers, and three ski lifts provide a daily capacity of 2,500 skiers.
Besides in skiing, you can enjoy in snowboarding, sledding, mountain climbing and other recreational activities.

National Park Risnjak
National Park Risnjak is located in Gorski Kotar, the most wooded area of western Croatian. The highest peak of Risnjak is Veliki Risnjak with 1528 meters above sea level. During the winter National Park Risnjak is open to all lovers of nature and wildlife. So here you can an organize observe wild animals in their habitat without affecting their everyday lives.
National Park Plitvice Lakes
This national park is our most famous and most visited national park. Every year the waterfalls visit over a million tourists from all over the world. The most beautiful time to visit lakes is at the time of extremely low temperatures when it comes to the freezing of waterfalls.
Winter in Nature Parks
Nature Park Medvednica – Ski Resort of Sljeme
Ski Resort Sljeme is only 20 minutes from the very center of Zagreb. Ski slopes are almost four kilometers long. Four slopes are equipped with the system for production of artificial snow so you do not have to keep an eye on the weather forecast.
Janica and Ivica Kostelic, the most awarded Croatian skiers made their first ski steps at these ski slopes. Besides in skiing you can be enjoyed in sledding, riding a snowboard and walking on marked trails.
Nature Park Northern Velebit – Ski Resort Krasno
On the north side of Velebit is situated the largest mountain settlement Krasno. From Senj from the seaside is only a 30 km to Krasno, and from Otocac on the mainland side about 20 kilometers. Krasno offers a small beautiful ski slope about 1.6 km long. The mountain chain Velebit is situated between Lika and the Adriatic Sea and is 165 km long. At the Velebit, you can find many mountain homes and hotels where you can stay.
The trails are very gentle and suitable for all beginners as well as for families with small children. The resort is equipped with a ski lift and numerous of restaurants. Besides skiing, you can enjoy the sledding and hiking, also. I recommend you to visit the youngest Croatian National Park Northern Velebit that is only a few kilometers away from Krasno. Do not forget that Krasno hasn’t a system of artificial snow.
Gorski Kotar and Lika are full of houses in which you can rent a room or even the whole house, and spend the weekend with a fireplace, mulled wine or a snowball fight. Offers of the house are really varied, from traditional Lika’s house to luxury wooden villas that are in their intimacy can accommodate a small family, but is inherent to all of them that are ideal for an escape from everyday life and providing relaxing moments to remember.
Most of the houses are situated within the farms and rural tourism that provide accommodation and catering services, and where local specialties are prepared from fresh ingredients.
