Biokovo – Mountain That Rises From the Sea
Biokovo is a mountain that rises from the Sea in Dalmatia and providing, from its peaks and lookouts, stunning panoramic views of the Makarska Riviera. Except for its place, Biokovo is unique because of the geomorphology and biological diversity, which is declared in a Nature Park in 1981.
Nature Park Biokovo
Protected Nature Park Biokovo extends over the Mountain Biokovo, and the mountain itself is a huge wall above the Makarska Riviera. This karst coastal area of unique natural characteristics is full of deep pits, caves, abysses, and forests. Some of these caves are so deep on the ground that, even, during the summer heat you can find the ice which was, during the ages, used for preserving the foods.
What to do on Biokovo
For a touristic exploring of the mountains are certainly interesting to visit the Botanical Garden and the mountain top Vosac and St Jure.
Visit Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden at the Biokovo is located above the village Kotistine, and St Jure is the highest peak of Biokovo. To the top of St. Jure you can be reached by car, which makes it especially attractive and accessible. This mountain peak provides a wonderful view of Makarska Riviera and the Dalmatian islands, and on a clear day you can see the peaks of the Italian Apennines and make the most beautiful phot0s from there.
Enthusiasts can enjoy cycling, hiking, and horseback riding on the slopes of the Nature Park Biokovo if the weather is good that day.
Hiking to the top of St Jure is priceless experiences
St Jure is with its 1762 meters height, the highest peak and the third highest mountain peak in Croatia, behind the Sinjal peak on Dinara (1831 m) and behind the top of the mountain Kamesnica (1809 m). You can reach the peak of St Jure by hiking trails, as well as the Biokovo road, which is the highest Croatian road.
In the summer, the peak of St. Jure is an attractive tourist site. But…. Let’s stop here. Do not be one of the careless tourists who “walk” after the mountain in flip-flops and shoes which is not adequate for this kind of mountains and without a map or bottle of water. Biokovo Mountain is a beautiful mountain, but at the same time is wild, be careful, and if nothing else, ask about the severity of the track, take with you enough water and do not forget to wear adequate footwear which will keep you from leg fractures, but also of a possible snake bites and etc.
Due to the altitude and the fact that it is located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and Continental climate, St Jure has the average annual temperature around 4° C, and snow is there most of the year. This is one of the coldest spots in Croatia.
At the very top, to which access is forbidden, is located radio-television transmitter, which in 1965 built former Zagreb Television. For the purposes of the building was built and the road, which was asphalted in 1978. The roads are mostly built by people from the Makarska Riviera. The transmitter is 90 m high, and the top of the transmitter is the highest point in Croatia, with a height of 1850 meters.
At the peak, St Jure is the small church, built-in 1968 near the old church, demolished due to the construction of the transmitter.
Below the top of the Biokovo Mountain is mountain lodge “Under the St Jure”, owned by Nature Park Biokovo.
