Mali Lošinj is the largest town in the Kvarner Bay. The beginnings of Mali Losinj date back to 12 century when the port city is gradually formed. At the end of the 19th century, it was discovered the healing effect of the climate on the island and the Losinj Island was turned into a fashionable Austro-Hungarian winter health and wellness resort. Situated in a protected Bay, surrounded by white houses with red roofs, and the typical Church Bell-Tower. Can you imagine Mali Losinj? In modern Mali Losinj is located, pharmacy, hospital, police station, post office, shipyard, banks, shops and inviting cafés along the coast.
The oldest part of the city is part of the Church of St Mary. The Church was built in the 19th century, and on the main altar is paintings which show the mother of God of the Rosary with St Dominic, St Catherine, and St Jacob.
In the narrow streets of Veli Losinj, through the ‘gate’ you can see the luxurious villas of former captains, ship owners, and wealthy upper class. A masterpiece of Croatian and world heritage site, the ancient bronze statue of an athlete, 192 cm tall, extracted from the sea underwater between the islet of Vele Orjule and the Losinj Island in 1999 immediately became a big star. It is assumed to end in the sea because of inclement weather for which they had to throw away Apoxyomenos or as a sacrifice to the gods for the safe travel through the Osor Chanel. The statue is fascinating and the fact that the statue is in London at the British Museum, as part of the exhibition of The Definition of the Beauty which deals with the body in ancient Greece art. After the end of the exhibition, the Apoxyomenos is coming home, in a new Museum in Mali Losinj.
For those who looking for the beach and the Sun, the most popular are the Suncana uvala (Sunny Bay) and Cikat Bay. It is possible to reach that bays on foot from the city center if you are interested in a bit of climbing through a multitude of stairs and walk through the pine forest. Cikat Bay is 30 km long and most popular in the summer for many water sports.
Walk a pleasant trail to a hill of Osorscica (peak Televrin, 588 m) and enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Losinj archipelago, the Istrian peninsula, and the Velebit Mountain.
Adopt a dolphin at the Institute Blue World in Veli Losinj, which conducts a scientific and educational program with the aim of protecting dolphins. Visitors can symbolically “adopt a dolphin” with small pay of contributions used to cover the costs of the Institute. At sea near Veli Losinj is protecting an area of dolphins, the first of its kind in the Mediterranean.
