With a rich historical heritage Osijek is the administrative, cultural, university and educational centre of the region of Slavonia and Baranja. Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia and has around 110,000 inhabitants.
Osijek is divided into two main regions – the upper town focusing on the city square and Tvrdja, and the preserved fortress town to the east of the town centre along the Drava River. Following the example of lowland Dutch fortresses, the Austrian authorities are built Tvrdja from 1712 to 1722 year. In the first half of the 18th century Tvrdja had changed its appearance. It was built the buildings for military needs, churches, monasteries and urban houses in Baroque style. It was opened high school, German theatre and printing office. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 residents of the Fortress seeks permission for the demolition of the walls because they was considered that this walls hampered the economic development of the city and traffic. Thus in 1923 began removing Glasija, retaining wall and cordons. What was once a massive wall represent is disappeared and today’s are left only Eugenia and Karl bastions along the Drava coast.
The monastery was completed in 1710. The monastery was built in the Baroque style.
After Baron Marko Count Pejacevic got permission, 1752 started the construction of the Reformed (Calvinist) Church which is today in street of Sandora Petefija. On the western edge of Retfala is reformed cemetery.
Mausoleum Pejacevic is octagonal structure built in 1891 in historicist style with mansard cupola coated sheet panels. The castle was built in the so-called Napoleonic period between 1796 and 1801 in the baroque classicism. Today in the western, smaller part of castle are located The Society of Mary’s Sisters of the Miraculous Medal, and in the greater part are the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the General Hospital.
As a sign of gratitude for having spared from the plague epidemic people of Gornji Grad are 1740 built a new chapel of St Rocco in honour of the patron against the plague.
Hotel Royal is the most magnificent building in Kapucinska Street was built as a hotel in 1905 in extremely historical style. Despite this appearance, a great hotel cafe is decorated in Art Nouveau style. Cinema Europe is most beautiful building of the entire modern architecture in Osijek from 1939 and represents the whole masterpiece of Croatian architecture. Cinema Urania is the masterpiece of the Art Nouveau period, and was built in 1912 according to the plans of the famous Osijek architect Viktor Axmann.
In the Italian Renaissance style was built in 1897 apartment building for Dr. Dragutin Neumann, famous Osijek attorney and politician. The building was designed by architect Josip Vancas-Pozega; today there are situated City and University Library.
According to the intentions of Colonel Volkmann, commander Osijek Fortress, in the 18th century was built a huge park. Today in its part are two children’s playgrounds, tennis courts and Rowing Club.
On the north side of the square of St Trinity is the most imposing building which was built on the orders of Prince Eugene of Savoy from the 1724 to 1726 as the building of the General Command in the synthesis of the Renaissance and Baroque. Today it is The University Rectorate of Josip Juraj Strossmayer.
This museum is dedicated to seashells and marine and freshwater life. Check out the most poisonous creature in the ocean (the remains of an octopus from the Philippines), fossils from 650 million years ago, a megalodon tooth and a vast array of exotic shells.
The building itself is stunning; it was renovated with the structure of city guard with a lovely oak-block floor and glass dome over an arcaded patio. In showcases you can find stones from Roman to Celtic helmets with explanations also in English.
This Museum houses a huge collection of treasures and artefacts relating to Slavonian history, including Bronze Age implements, Roman artefacts from the colony of Mursa, beautiful textiles, jewellery and fine furniture.
